In 1987/88, Julie Anne and Charlene Hewat undertook an important expedition for the Black Rhino. A conservation bicycle ride from Glasgow in the UK to Zimbabwe.

Their journey included riding through the snows of Bavaria, to crossing the eastern section of the Sahara desert known as the Nubian Desert, finally arriving at Victoria Falls a year later.

The Ride for Rhino which it became known as, raised a million dollars for the “Operation Stronghold”, Save the Rhino Campaign in Zimbabwe.  En route they met with world leaders and dedicated conservationists who gave their support to the cause.

The expedition traversed 300km of the Central Kalahari on horseback, bringing attention to the diminishing Black Rhino population and culturally rejected and most ancient of all people the Kalahari Bushmen.  All monies raised went to Hokoyo Wildlife Foundation in support of Black Rhino Breeding Expansion Ranges.
