10 Essential Tips For Your Horse Trek!

1. Horses: Use reputable operators  with well cared for horses. Plains of  Africa Safaris will  advise you on the best options, style and area you wish to explore on your horse safari with something to suit everyone including warmbloods, boerpherds and other cross breds.

2. Level of Riding Required: Guests must be experienced riders. However you must ride regularly (at least once or twice a week) and be comfortable at a canter and gallop as well as being able to do small jumps should you have to.

3. Many horse safaris in Africa are mostly English schooled, so we highly recommend that Western riders have a course of lessons in English style prior to arrival.

4. Weight Limit: Maximum of 95 kgs or 210lbs or 15 stone.

5. Safety: Make sure if you are entering a widlife area that all rides are conducted by experienced professional guides; the lead guide is armed with a rifle.

6. Reputable horse safari outfitters management staff and guides undergo regular first aid training and some with a specialised Doctor for remote areas. The lead guide has a local phone and a satellite phone and a radio for use in emergencies.

7. Hard Hats: Are compulsory, please bring your own well fitting hard hat.

8. Tack: Most good outfitters have a selection of imported GP English saddles each equipped with saddle bags including water bottles. Some will also inlcude Australian stock saddles and South African Trail Rider, Mclelans available for those who prefer.

9. Average horse safari includes maximum of eight guests, minimum two guests.

10. Essential that all experienced riders wear trail riding boots and riding jodpurs (breeches) for added comfort on the trail.
